Digital media are seen as important instruments of increasing participation and diversity in arts and culture. To examine whether this view is justified, this article draws on two bodies of research that have hitherto remained disconnected: research on cultural participation, and research on the digital divide. Building on these insights, the article examines the Taking Part Survey data on digital media and cultural participation in the UK between 2005/06 and 2015/16, focusing on museums and galleries. While the results confirm that digital media provide an important means of engaging new audiences, they also show that the engagement with museums and galleries both on- and off-line remains deeply unequal. Most worryingly, the gaps between the haves and the have nots are even wider on-line than in the case of physical visits. Rather than helping increase the diversity of audiences, online access seems to reproduce, if not enlarge, existing inequalities.


I media digitali sono visti come strumenti importanti per aumentare la partecipazione e la diversità nelle arti e nella cultura. Per esaminare se questa opinione sia giustificata, il presente articolo si basa su due filoni di ricerca che finora sono rimasti disconnessi: la ricerca sulla partecipazione culturale e la ricerca sul divario digitale. Basandosi su questi spunti, l'articolo esamina i dati del Taking Part Survey (sondaggio sulla partecipazione) sui media digitali e la partecipazione culturale nel Regno Unito tra il 2005/06 e il 2015/16, concentrandosi su musei e gallerie. Mentre i risultati confermano che i media digitali forniscono un mezzo importante per coinvolgere un nuovo pubblico, mostrano anche che l'interazione con musei e gallerie sia online che offline rimane profondamente diseguale. L’aspetto più preoccupante è che i divari tra gli abbienti e i non abbienti sono ancora più ampi online che nel caso delle visite fisiche. Anziché contribuire ad aumentare la diversità del pubblico, l'accesso online sembra riprodurre, se non allargare, le disparità esistenti.

In order to better understand the participation of young people in youth cultures, the essay will analyse the factors of globalisation, social structure (ethnicity, class, and gender), and life transitions. It begins with a discussion on the semiotics of cultural transmissions to understand how cultures are globally spread and received. The impact of three theoretical approaches on social structure will then be investigated: the ecological, the structural, and the post-structural. Male and female genders are then placed under the sociological microscope, before concluding with youth transitions. The essay argues that globalisation transmits cultures, which are then changed by a structure (which can be interpreted through many paradigms), as young people progress through their own life transition.


Al fine di comprendere meglio la partecipazione dei giovani alle culture giovanili, il presente saggio analizzerà i fattori di globalizzazione, struttura sociale (etnia, classe e genere) e transizioni di vita. Inizia con una discussione sulla semiotica delle trasmissioni culturali per capire come le culture sono diffuse e ricevute a livello globale. Verrà quindi studiato l'impatto di tre approcci teorici sulla struttura sociale: ecologico, strutturale e post-strutturale. I generi maschile e femminile vengono quindi osservati al microscopio sociologico, prima di concludere con le transizioni giovanili. Il saggio sostiene che la globalizzazione trasmette culture, che vengono poi modificate da una struttura (che può essere interpretata attraverso molti paradigmi), mentre i giovani progrediscono attraverso la propria transizione di vita.

Professor Joan Manuel del Pozo analyses the concept of youth, stressing its enormous elasticity and high social consideration in today’s hegemonic culture. He also points to liquid, paternalistic family pedagogy as the ultimate reason for youths’ inability to take on responsibility when they reach adulthood. Noting its discredit, Del Pozo suggests that we reconsider the traditional concept of adulthood as an ultimate life goal and instead begin to consider it an unfinished process of personal construction, a process grounded upon freedom as the core, axiomatic principle around which human beings in their maturation can take on their responsibilities, develop their abilities, fulfil their desires and achieve full realisation along the way.


Il Professor Joan Manuel del Pozo analizza il concetto di gioventù, sottolineandone l'enorme elasticità e l'elevata considerazione sociale nella cultura egemonica di oggi. Indica anche la pedagogia della famiglia liquida e paternalistica come ragione ultima dell'incapacità dei giovani di assumersi la responsabilità quando raggiungono l'età adulta. Notando il suo discredito, Del Pozo suggerisce di riconsiderare il concetto tradizionale di età adulta come obiettivo ultimo della vita e invece di cominciare a considerarlo come un processo incompiuto di costruzione personale, un processo fondato sulla libertà come il principio fondamentale, assiomatico attorno al quale gli esseri umani nella loro la maturazione possono assumere le proprie responsabilità, sviluppare le proprie capacità, soddisfare i propri desideri e raggiungere la piena realizzazione lungo il cammino.
